Holiday Club: This year’s holiday club – Rocky’s Plaice – takes place from Monday 26th to Friday 30th July. The setting is a fish and chip shop and the children will discover the stories of Peter and his friends from the book of Acts. They will hear how the early church started to grow and change the world! Please pray for all those involved with leading and helping during the week and also for the 180 children who have registered and will be coming each day that it would be a week of real blessing for everyone involved and that everything would run smoothly. Thanks! |

Why? Kidz & Kidz Zone: These groups will take a break over the summer and there will be a special summer programme for the children with a DVD and craft activities each week. Please pray for those helping over the summer, that they will have a great time with the children. Please also thank God for the committed team who work with them throughout the year and pray that they will enjoy their summer holiday as they have a well deserved break. |

| Crèche: Our crèche for under 3s will continue to run each Sunday morning throughout the summer. Please pray for Melanie, our crèche leader, and her team as they work with the children, that they would know how important their role is as they show our babies and toddlers God’s love each week. | |||||
| Little Feet: Our parent and toddler group takes a break over the summer but will be back on Monday 6th September. Every Monday during term time from 1.15-2.45pm our church welcomes children between the ages 0-4 and their parents/carers. The first part of the afternoon is spent playing with various toys and maybe taking part in a craft activity. This is followed by refreshments and then the afternoon concludes with music and singing time – the favourite part of the afternoon! Please pray for all the families who are part of the group that they would enjoy the summer and that God would continue to be at work in their lives. Please also give thanks for the regular members of the team – Bill and Myra Brignell, Margaret Francis, Barry Barnes, Joan Baker, Joyce Gray and Lynne Bradley, and pray that they would enjoy a well earned rest over the summer. | |||||
|
Brigades: The Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades also take a break over the summer. The groups will be back on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th September. The Brigades have enjoyed another very successful year with many children and young people coming along each Thursday and Friday evening during term time. They’ve enjoyed working towards various badges throughout this year as well as spending time with their friends and learning more about God and how they can grow in their relationship with Him. Please pray that everyone who is part of the Brigades would have a great summer break. Please pray especially for Rob as he goes out to Malawi to work on a building project and with local children – that God would bless him and speak to him about the direction his life should take on his return. |

Schools’ work: At the end of June and beginning of July I was part of the team presenting the ‘It’s Your Move’ workshop to years 6 and 7 at Little Stanmore, Stanburn, Belmont and Aylward Middle schools. The workshop aims to help answer any questions or concerns that the young people may have as they think about moving on to secondary school in September. Please pray for all those who are moving schools in September that they would have a good summer and a positive start at their new schools. Please also thank God for all the opportunities in local schools over the past year and pray that the links would continue to be strengthened next year. |

CAPTAINS YEARLY REPORT 2009/10 A summary of what we have been up to over the past year (Adjusted, added to and reprinted from this year’s display programme) Many thanks to our guests of honour at last year’s display, Alex Owen and John Knight who had both been the church’s youth workers, Brigade Chaplains and BB/GB helpers for many years before they moved on in other directions. On 11 July 2009, 60 former Brigade members came to celebrate 70 years of the 1st Stanmore Girls’ Brigade at SBC and 50 years of the 1st Stanmore Boys’ Brigade. It was great to meet up again and a good time was had by all.
This year GB has seen a number of new girls join, particularly in Explorers and a few in Juniors and Seniors. In September, we welcomed our new church youth worker, Helen Barker, to the GB team to help lead the Seniors and Brigaders. Rachel Thorpe married Paul Topham in a lovely service joined by their family and friends. Badgework got off to a good start, including card making, barn dancing and figure marching. Many girls recommitted themselves for another year at our Annual Enrolment Service. During this service many of the youth, including past members of the GB, were baptised. In March, we held Brigade Week where members of Explorers and Juniors took part in sponsored team games to raise funds. The Seniors and Brigaders organised hot chocolate to be available after the parade service in March which was enjoyed by many. We organized an Easter Egg-stravaganza for all the local GB companies. This was well attended and gave everyone a chance to explore the meaning of Easter through the theme of Eggs – including going home with a crème egg!! The Seniors and Brigaders met for a session of ten pin bowling to end the Spring Term. We’d like to congratulate Helen and Pete Barker on the birth of their son Matthew. The summer programme began after half term when we enjoyed the lovely weather and got out onto the field for games. We took 11 juniors to the BT Giant Sleepover being held at Kenton Baptist Church, for GB girls in year 4 and above. As a company group we took part in the Talent Show with our Go Bananas rap and Stanmore Stomp, the girls made us very proud. Great fun was had by all, although the leaders decided it should be renamed as a “Wakeover” as there didn’t seem to be a lot of sleep going on! We took 25 juniors bowling as an end of term treat, this was also a lot of fun – it was great to see how supportive and encouraging the girls were towards each other. BB ACTIVITIES 8 Junior boys went to a Battalion Weekend Camp at Sunbury on Thames and had a great time with good weather. There was a total of 52 boys from 7 different companies. The summer session was spent over on the field, playing games when the weather permitted. In September we started back with on-going badgework, games and crafts. The Juniors attended a quasar event in Hemel with a total of about 40 boys from the battalion attending. During this session we held one of our Scalextric events which was very well supported and raised about £100 for the company funds. We held our Enrolment service when all members recommitted themselves for another year in the brigade. We were joined by 2nd Wembley for our Christmas party of games and food which is always great fun. With only three boys we joined the 2nd Wembley at their church, Park Lane Methodist in Wembley, for our joint Church Parade. Also in March we held our Brigade Week which is the only time we ask for money to help the work of the companies. This year we did a sponsored games event and raised a combined total with the girls and the church of around £650 which was split between us. A team of four Junior boys, Evan, Maxamilian, Joseph and Edward took part in the London District Bible Quiz on our own here in the church. This meant that teams all over London could take part without having to travel to other companies. We finished 12th out of 23. After the Display and Awards evening every Thursday was spent on the field playing games as the weather has been so good. In May five boys took part in the Battalion Fun Day at Uxbridge with sessions in gym, bouncy castle, craft, football, cricket and much more. In June six boys took part in the Battalion Athletics with the Anchor Boys being mixed up with other companies for a variety of races. We only had two Juniors enter but they did so well that they came second in the small team competition out of five. Four boys attended the Junior Section camp in July and they all had a great time but narrowly failed to win the best hut competition for a 5th consecutive year. Many thanks to Antony & Damien for taking them. Many thanks to Rachel, Paul, Antony and Damien who have helped with the running of the Anchors and Juniors Boys, and to Ruth, Rachel, Esther, Helen and Liz who have helped with the GB over the past year. Many thanks to all the parents who signed up to help on the rota for an evening or two. We do hope this year’s joint display and awards evening was enjoyed by all and thanks to our guests of honour Judith and Geoffrey Rose. If you are able to help us next term please sign up of the rotas in the foyer. Without enough adults we are unable to run the groups. As a helper you may be asked to make some drinks and perhaps help out with simple crafts and games. However, mostly we just need you there as an adult in case of emergency, so you could just observe our fun and games. If you can give up just one/two hours on a Thursday or Friday evening please sign up. The more people available to share the load the better. We break for a well earned summer holiday on 15th and 16th July, returning on 9th and 10th September for another new year. |
