Youth at Stanmore Baptist

 YOUTH MINISTRY

Helen Barker, MA, BA
Youth Worker

September 2009

It’s been another exciting term for the youth work.  We’ve started new monthly meetings on Sunday evenings which are proving to be a big hit.  God is blessing the young people and leaders in amazing ways;  healing, releasing gifts and speaking in remarkable ways.  We took a trip to the Hollywood Bowl, which was a fun opportunity to spend time together.  Raised almost £1000 for the café project at our Spring Fair on 13 February!  The following Saturday we held a whole-day event.  The morning was spent serving others (see below) and in the afternoon we investigated the apparent conflict between science and Christianity, before a Top-Secret fun event in the evening!  Overall it is amazing to see what God is doing in and through the young people, growing them in faith, numbers and confidence in Him.  Please pray that this immense blessing will continue!

On 20th February, four of the youth (Alex, Becca, Jesse and me) from Stanmore Baptist Church went to spend half an hour in Kent House.  I spoke to Olive, a lady who talked to me about her past and how much she enjoyed Kent House.  She told me about her new friends at the House and how she is still involved with her church. I think that it’s wonderful that the church still interacts with seniors unable to attend services and I hope that they continued to do so.                                         Sola

On Saturday 20th February as part of our Away Day, Jessie, Alex, Sola and I went to Kent House to chat to the residents.  I talked to a few people, one of which was the mum of one of our church members.   Two women I spoke to said they really miss going to church but they both said that the care they get is good.  Even though we only chatted to them for a few minutes, they appreciated it so much;  it just made me think that we should do more for them as a youth group.

On the morning of the youth Away Day, four of us went to Kent House and talked to a few of the people there for about half an hour.  I talked to four people, each for about 5-10 minutes and it was really good and I think they really enjoyed it.                                                                                    Alex

Yesterday (20th February) me and some of the other members of Rock Solid went to Kent House to meet some of the residents.   This is the second time that I have been and each time I have really enjoyed myself.  We wandered around and talked to many of the residents.  It is really fascinating to hear stories and see pictures of when they were our age.  I had a long conversation with one lady about music and her favourite composers and mine.   With lots of these people             I really felt that, even though we are so different in our ages, there are still many activities that we can relate to each other through.  Another thing that was particularly fascinating was hearing their stories of Stanmore because many of them do still remember what it was like.   We talked about the café and everybody I mentioned this to seemed genuinely interested and asked where it was, etc.   Personally I really enjoy doing this, the residents all seem grateful, and I had fun!  I would like to go more often.                                                                                                                                                  Jessie

Footnote from Freda  These four young people were brilliant.  As I, too, circulated and chatted during the half hour we were there, it was clear that the visit was much appreciated by both young and old.   Some of the residents were asking ‘why have you come?’   When society in general writes off old people as being ‘past it’ and a burden to the state, this visit went a long way to boosting their morale and to encouraging them in their situation.  Even the Manager thanked us for coming and said:  Do come again!

Helen & Peter Barker

Hi, I’m Helen and I’m the new Youth Worker here at Stanmore Baptist Church.  I officially started work with you on 1st September, although I feel as though we’ve been here for ages now.  I’ve been asked to write a little bit about myself, so here goes…

I was born and grew up in a little village in Lincolnshire called Scotter, close to Scunthorpe.  My first church was the Methodist chapel in the village, where I grew up through the Sunday School and began my faith.  I left home at 18 to go to St Hilda’s College, Oxford, to study maths, mainly because one of my teachers told me I wasn’t clever enough.  On my first Sunday, I ended up at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church where I met Pete.  These 3 years were really formative in my faith, and during them God called me to Youth Work in a really obvious way.  After 3 years of producing theatre shows, doing youth work, running a student Christian group, punting (and some maths – but not much), I graduated.  However, the first degree was so much fun that I started a second in Youth and Community Studies and Applied Theology with the Centre for Youth Ministry.  My placement church was Kidlington Baptist Church, just outside Oxford, and I spent a total of 6 years there, first as a student youth worker and then as a ‘real’ youth worker.  Pete and I got married in August 2004, shortly before he ran away to sea to join the Navy.  Since then, he’s been gallivanting around the world, apparently working really hard, though his postcards always seem to mention lots of exciting activities that don’t sound much like work.

Earlier this year, Pete was selected to train as a barrister for the Navy and a very nice church decided to give me a job and a house.  We’re now nicely settled just around the corner from church with the third member of our family, an extremely scruffy and slightly naughty dog called Ragamuffin. When I’m not planning the latest youth pizza fest, I enjoy being taken for a walk by Raggy, learning to sail on Aldenham Reservoir or watching rugby (I’m Welsh!!!)

What’s  Cookin’?
is an innovative project which aims to provide cooking and shopping skills through fun, practical, interactive workshops.  Young people will learn to cook healthy meals on a budget.  They will then share their new found skills by cooking for Senior citizens at two events.  They will also produce a Food Guide which will provide the recipes, the nutritional value of the food as well as pictures of their sessions.

Project leaders Anne-Marie Twumasi and Olivia Belchier are working with Amanda Kerr and Sola Ogunsola to recruit up to 20 young people to be part of this exciting project.  They are also contacting cooks to lead sessions so they can learn African, Caribbean, Chinese, Indian and Thai dishes in the 5 workshops proposed.  A special workshop on English dishes should include how to make perfect pancakes!!!

What's Cookin'?
Did cooking for New Horizons on Saturday 21st February with support from Jill Bridger.

Every Thursday night Rock Solid takes

Let us introduce you to:  Alex, Amanda, Anastasia, Andrew, Ann-Marie, Becca, Becky, Ben, Chris, David, Deji, Dion, Dylan, Emilia, Jacob, Jessica, Jessica, Jo, Lucy, Olivia, Phillippa, Promise, Sarah, Stephen, Sola, Tofunmi, Tofe, Zachary, Zoe and friends.

Please pray for this group of people.  Also, now you know their names, please say hello to them!!

Rock Solid has undergone a few changes since the beginning of the year.  In February, Stuart and Jenna resigned as our Youth Leaders so AJ, Elise, Clare, Liz, Phillippa and Helen were left holding the reins.  James has continued to be a great support each week but we needed more help if we were to maintain our small group Bible study and not burn ourselves out.  So, this term we have seen Mike Fisher, Denise Kerner, Doug Abrahams, Rita Jourdan and Lande Adejumo all do one or two stints, and we would like to say a big THANK YOU to them.

In March, Rock Solid moved out of 87 Abercorn Road and back into the upstairs room at church.  We really could not all fit into one room in the house!

After learning about Lent and Easter and a very practical session on Healing, we have spent the last few months looking at Spirituality through the lives of Noah, Joshua, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Esther, Job and Deborah.

In April, we asked the youth to ‘shadow’ a morning service.  They joined with the adults in welcoming at the door, putting chairs out, preparing communion and making tea and coffee and all the other jobs that need to be done each Sunday.  We had really positive feedback from the church and the youth enjoyed themselves, as well as learning that church does not just ‘happen’ each week!

Since the beginning of the year our church, with other local churches, have been offering healing through prayer and laying on of hands outside Sainsbury’s every Saturday morning, locally known as SHOTS (Stanmore Healing On The Streets).  Some members of Rock Solid have been involved in SHOTS and experienced the amazing truth that God can use all of us, whatever our age, to bring healing to others.

Food is never far away when Rock Solid meet.  We had a party to say good bye to Stuart and Jenna. In March we went bowling and had pizza.  In May we had a barbecue - big THANKS go to Ian Woodhouse for all the burgers, sausages and chicken!  We have attended two special Rock Solid lunches and Saturday afternoon sessions, trying to help the leadership find us a new youth leader.  And in July we have our end of term party.

Just before we finally break for summer a lot of the youth will assist Rachel in the Holiday Club this year.

At the time of writing we have not planned any sessions for September, but a few things are certain.  In September we will warmly welcome any Year 6 children from Kidzone to join with us.  We will also have to move back into the house and rethink how to use the space wisely.

In November, we shall take a group to Norfolk for a Houseparty with Urban Saints (formerly Crusaders) and we are looking forward to our new Youth Worker, Helen Barker, and husband Peter, joining the church in September!

Thank you for reading this and please remember us all in your prayers!
